PCOS and Fertility
Many women with an unfulfilled desire for children suffer from PCOS. At the Ceres Fertility Center in Berlin, the diagnosis is made through an ultrasound of the ovaries when PCOS is suspected. But what is PCOS, and how can it be recognized? Here, we will explain the symptoms of PCOS and the treatment options available to you.
What is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a congenital disorder of the ovaries that occurs in about 10% of women.
PCOS often leads to cycle irregularities. The menstrual cycle is often extended to more than 35 days, but other symptoms may also occur.
Symptoms of PCOS:
- Unfulfilled desire for children due to factors such as reduced egg quality or lack of ovulation
- Irregular menstrual cycles or absence of menstruation
- Increased male hormones, potentially causing acne, hair loss, or excessive body hair
- Disrupted glucose metabolism (insulin resistance)
- Thickening of the ovary's outer layer (capsule fibrosis)
- While some symptoms can be noticed by the woman herself, others must be diagnosed by a doctor to confirm PCOS.
PCOS After Stopping Birth Control Pills
In some women, periods may stop after discontinuing birth control pills, even if they previously had a regular cycle while taking the pill (amenorrhea).
The cause of this cycle disturbance is often PCOS. The main symptom is usually an overly large egg reserve, leading to a hormonal imbalance and malfunction of the ovaries.
Diagnosis of PCOS
A targeted ultrasound of the ovaries can confirm the diagnosis. Ideally, this ultrasound is combined with a hormone analysis to confirm both the large egg reserve and hormonal imbalance.
Some women also experience weight gain, and if insulin resistance is found, treatment with metformin may be beneficial.
Some patients also suffer from acne or increased body and facial hair, usually due to an excess of male hormones.
